literary universe, part 4: Andreas Eschbach
In 2000, the beginning of October, I met Andreas Eschbach authors during a seminar in Berlin in person. I had been lucky. It had in fact been many applications for the seminar, and I was for some time been on the waiting list. One of the last authors, I was then able to participate myself in the workshop.
Andreas Eschbach's book "The Jesus Video" was for many weeks if not months, geprangt topped the bestseller list on Amazon. Because of my affinity with religion, theology, and in general the Christian faith I had found me the book and read quickly. I was not fully satisfied. However, the idea is great: During excavations a video tape is found, containing the records of Jesus Christ. One of the most beautiful passages of the novel is the one where people are described who have seen the video. And in the end, of course, also the reader the question: How would it be if you could see a video that shows Jesus Christ? Not just any actor, but Jesus Christ himself?
I brought in after the lecture by Andreas Eschbach also some remarks in the discussion, and mentioned shortcomings that has the history in my opinion. And I also mentioned that have made what is undoubtedly a great idea much more to be done can. In part, the action strongly flattened or secondary aspects are described, and do not necessarily make a splash. To my positive surprise Andreas Eschbach also confessed that he was aware of certain weaknesses of the novel deliberately, and strive to do better on his next novel.
appeared little later, "A trillion dollars," a novel that will probably also be assessed in an objective sense by one or two grades higher than "The Jesus Video" must. This young man inherits a tidy sum of a trillion dollars, and the novel describes bravura in which the protagonist behaves his sudden wealth, what he is doing what he does. Woven into the exciting action are quite sharp criticisms of the global financial system, and it is described vividly how the gap between rich and poor people, rich and poor countries through existing systems which control people in this world, and apply extended is.
I got the lecture of Mr. Eschbach still remember well, and I have exchanged with him a few times even after mails. Meanwhile, he has - as he himself wrote times on his website - not the time to answer every mail. Where is particularly noteworthy that he has made all the important questions and answers to his HP, the authors and Readers may be of importance. It remains basically no answer. In particular, his novel "A trillion dollars" is highly recommended.
